Still Here, Somewhat

This was supposed to be the week the boss and I allowed ourselves two days off from work before the holiday hours really get extended. So yesterday and today were my "scheduled" days off.

And not so much.

The boss decided to be sick yesterday, thus giving him (essentially) 3 days off this week.

I'm not liking him much right now.

Oh, he was actually sick, this time anyway. But he's always never "feeling well." I have a little trouble drumming up appropriate sympathy for him when he's actually 'illen because he always seems to be sick.

He did manage to open the store yesterday and put in about 3 hours before calling me and begging me to come in. I guess a 10 hour day is better than a 13 hour day. But I was definitely bummed because I had just worked two 13 hour days and was looking forward to time off.

So far, so good today. He knows he better be on his deathbed if he calls today.

I've got my babysitting gig to attend to this afternoon. This is a gig I actually look forward to every week. I get to hang out with my "not quite two-year-old" granddaughter.

It's one of life's little pleasures for me.

We've been short-handed for over a month now. It's so hard to believe we can't get a qualified candidate hired, especially with the unemployment rate hovering near ten percent.

I can't wait for the Christmas "shopping" season to be over with. The extra money I'm making doesn't compensate for the time off I'm quite fond of and missing.

So that's today's whiny ass post for you.

I've got to hand it to you. I could not would not do your job unless I was starving to death. And i wouldn't be real good for business, either. After all these years at the prison I have developed a very small tolerance for bullsh*t. From the bosses or anybody else.

Whiny ass indeed, suck it up and be a man.

Kidding, SO kidding. You're a saint for being there. You'd never again catch me working in retail around the holidays. 5 years was plenty for me as a grad student. Perhaps it's why I adamantly refuse to shop in a mall now?

darev2005 -- I'm pretty low key about most things, but Working more than 40-45 hours a week isn't something I'm crazy about any more. I've reached the age where time off is much appreciated and looked forward to.

Another Day of Crazy -- Okay, you made me laugh here. ;)

I actually like my job, just not as much this time of year.

You said it has been impossible to find someone qualified to hire. What are the qualifications? I don't know what the job is, so I'm no help.

Sounds like your blog name is very justified...

Everyone needs a little whine time now and again....besides, it's less than 4 weeks until Christmas...then it'll be back to normal-ish...right?

by the by, JPT, I singled you out as the sole non-lurking male commenter over at my place... you'll have a hell of a time fending off the women now!

Aw JPT, glad you get some time with your little grandbaby today. You deserve a break!! I am trying to avoid the malls and do some cyber shopping. I used to like the craziness of the holidays -- now it just makes me cringe.
Hope your weekend is a great one!

Hmmm... I could use this post over here! Japan isn't as BAD as the US in as far as unemployment rates...but even in the nursing home industry... it's understaffed and the nursing home head guy can't seem to "find" anyone new. That's why we're stuck doing 6 to 7 nightshifts a month.. instead of the normal 4 - 5. Geez...I wonder if the low wages and all that are a factor... duh....

How did Thanksgiving go with your daughter? I thought of you and was hoping it was going OK.

If my boss would have called me I would have said I had malaria and was barely alive. Ass. ;)

Surely, someone could be found to replace the worthless coworker, after all, the boss didn't set his sights very high when he hired her.

I'm really glad you have your granddaughter to babysit. They really do make life easier to deal with.

enjoy the grand daughter time. Sometimes a few hours a week is all I feel like spending with my two year old :)

Why don't they just bring back WCW? Just kidding, that might just send you over the edge. Hope they find someone soon.

I can completely sympathize, time is a lot more valuable to me than money.

Why don’t you get your granddaughter to help out at work? She couldn’t do any worse that Worthless Co-Worker.

It drives me crazy when I hear of businesses that are chronically understaffed despite the whopping unemployment rate. If we were in the same city, I'd offer to do a hiring for you. I've got it down to a science after 9 years of being a manager, and can generally find someone decent in short order. I wish I could hire someone and mail them to you or something.

I do not miss retail. My heart goes out to everyone who works in this field. Funny...back in the 60s it was a great career to consider. Do ya remember?

I don't blame you. I would absolutely HATE going in on my day off. I think I'd be tempted to not answer my phone ;)

Oh I HATE going in on an off day ... especially when you've been working so many hours. Bummer, you have my sympathies.

Ha! Where in the world are you? Anywhere close, I'll come work for the holidays.

So, not to be too nosy, but how did the visit with your daughter go?
