Doesn't Everyone Want An Indoor Pool?

Yesterday pretty much sucked. I'm counting on the "suckage" to continue through about Tuesday Wednesday Thursday.

I know most people would be pleasantly surprised to wake up on a Friday morning to an indoor pool. But in this case, not me.

My hot water heater died yesterday. If it had just simply expired quietly I would have been much happier. But no, it had to burst in its death throes.

While some people would have thought there was some measure of luck in actually being home when this occurred, there really wasn't much advantage to that. I quickly found the shut off valve and shut down the water flow immediately. Or so I thought.

But no, said valve was broken, and the water gushed and flowed gleefully from one room to the next, and the next, and the..... You get the picture.

So then I burst into the hall of the apartment building, looking very fashionable in boxers and a ratty t-shirt, to hunt down another shut off valve. For you see I know they're located above the ceiling tiles in the hallway. I think I shut down about 6 valves before finding the one that actually leads to my apartment. Silly me,  for thinking the nearest one ran to my apartment, that would make too much sense. So 3/4 of the building was without water for awhile.

(As you can imagine, I was a hit with the other tenants yesterday.)

So Service Master was summoned and clean up has commenced. While my apartment is rather spacious, the addition of three industrial size humidifiers and six hurricane fans have shrunk the place. And yes, I have hurricane force winds circulating through the place.

On a positive note, all carpeting and flooring is going to be replaced due to this untimely death of the hot water heater.

On a negative note, all carpeting and flooring is going to be replaced due to this untimely death of the hot water heater.

This means much packing and shifting of crap in my place over the next few days. And I've got to work in going to work as well.

Isn't life grand?

Wow, that sucks. I'm sorry you had a tsunami in your apartment. :(

Personally, I would have appreciated the fact that my floors would extra clean, since I'm not real big on the whole mopping thing...

ChiTown Girl -- There's always that to consider. ;) Mopping isn't my favorite chore either.

Oh yuck! Are they at least going to put you up somewhere posh with indoor swimming, jacuzzi, or hot tub until all the work gets done?...umm,,,I'm going to guess no, but you never know, maybe if i put that thought out there in the universe...?
Hang in there!

Sandra -- That doesn't appear to be in the works. Which is fine. If I'm here the work needed to get done, will get done faster anyway.

Oh joy. One more reason why I will never (hopefully) live in an apartment again. For some reason they always place the water heaters where they will do the most damage if they erupt and will be the most difficult to replace.

Oh, that's no fun! Had the same thing happen, except it was while I was on vacation. So everything swam for a while.

Brilliant you- how did you know the valves were in the ceiling? I would never have thought they were there.

Hooray for new floors! (that's me being "glass half full" for you)

darev2005 -- Plenty of damage here, that's for sure. Thankfully I've got insurance and the people who own this building are pretty decent. I'm surprised they're replacing the carpeting/flooring actually. While I was at work today the maintenance guy replaced every single faucet in the place, and reworked/replaced any plumbing that looked even suspect.

Another Day of Crazy -- A few years ago they reworked and/or replaced piping in the hallway. That's how I knew where to go.

Alicia -- Nothing wrong with that view. That's how I usually try to look at things.

BeMistified -- Thanks for popping in. No lush accommodations here, but things are improving at a reasonable pace.

That happened to me once in my building and cost $15,000 to replace drywall, carpet, etc. It was from a frozen waterpipe that burst in a sink no one even used.

I was actually looking forward to your telling us about an indoor pool you had gotten.

Just Plain Tired said...

Charlene -- Sorry to disappoint, and now that I think about it, an actual indoor pool would be kind of nice. ;)

Well I'm glad that your cloud has a silver lining at least (new floors, insurance to replaced damages). But still, it's a drag that it happened at all.

Here's hoping things are all fixed up in a timely fashion.

Mustang Sally -- Timely fashion is what I'm hoping for at this point myself. ;)

Wow, that is a sucky day, and unplanned excessive cleaning. I think you're officially allowed to be grumpy. Just think how nice the new floors will look when they're in!

Just Plain Tired said...

Sarahf -- The suck factor was in high gear that day, but slowly and surely things are getting back to normal here.

I hope things start looking better for you soon. ~Ron :-)

TOG -- Not the end of the world here, just an annoyance that I could have done without. :)

hmmmm.. life is not a bed of roses after all. i wish you're able to fix things as soon as possible, though. luck on that!

simply kim -- Things are progressing about as well as could be expected. I'll take the luck though any day, so long as it's good luck. :)

I'm late to the party (from hell) and I'm sorry to hear you had to go through all that. Let's hope every day brings you closer to normalcy. Best of luck!!

Scarlet -- We're getting there. Carpet dude is supposed to be here today to measure, then install Tues or Wed. (hopefully)
